The results are in for this year’s top 10 finalists for the Awards and Recognition Association (ARA) seventh annual sportsmanship award www.arasportsmanshipaward.com, given to one outstanding NCAA Division I collegiate football player who best personifies the spirit of sportsmanship.

The 2011 Sportsmanship Award recipient will be chosen from 10 finalists and announced this November.  “This year’s candidates are an outstanding bunch, there is no shortage of positive role-model athletes,” according to former Brigham Young University Head Football Coach LaVell Edwards who chairs the selection committee.

Previous winners are Arizona Cardinals and former University of Texas defensive end, Sam Acho (2010); Miami Dolphin and former Kansas State University tight end, Jeron Mastrud (2009), Chicago Bears and former Northwestern University receiver Eric Peterman (2008); Winnipeg Blue Bombers and former Washington State quarterback Alex Brink (2007); Cincinnati Bengels and former Rutgers University fullback, Brian Leonard (2006) and, Carolina Panthers and former University of Memphis running back, DeAngelo Williams (2005).

The 2011 finalists, in alphabetical order are:

Dennis Harwood of Corona del Mar was elected president of the Southern California Golf Association at its Annual Meeting on Oct. 25 in Universal City.

Harwood, a retired attorney and business consultant who is a member of Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, will serve the SCGA in the coming year. He succeeds Steve Titus of Pasadena, a member of San Gabriel Country Club.

“I look forward to serving this exceptional organization as president,” Harwood said of the SCGA. “We are recognized on a national basis for having the top golf administrators in the business. It is also difficult to imagine a region with more diverse types of courses to pursue our passion than Southern California – from oceanfront courses to desert courses, from mountain courses to parkland courses.”

Joining Harwood on the SCGA Executive Committee are Dr. Tom Lindgren of Indian Wells, vice president; Ken Bien of Rancho Santa Fe, secretary; and Al Frank of Glendale, treasurer.

Several SCGA members were honored for their service at the Annual Meeting. Bob Wright of Rancho Cucamonga received the Jim House Award, which recognizes the work of an exceptional SCGA volunteer. Bill Woolfolk of Los Angeles was given the Don Carlson Award for his labors as the handicap chair of Bel-Air Country Club. Don Emerson of Rancho Mirage was named the winner of the inaugural Newell Pinch Delegate of the Year Award for his liaison work between his Mission Hills Country Club and the SCGA.

The SCGA Hall of Fame inducted two new members, Amy Alcott and Charlie Sifford, at a luncheon that followed the Annual Meeting. Sifford broke the PGA’s color barrier in the early 1960s and Alcott won 29 tournaments, including five major championships, over her LPGA career.

Nielsen Media Research* found that residents of Washington, D.C. and New York prefer watching RT to other international news channels. Nielsen found RT’s average daily audience in Washington, D.C. is bigger than that of Euronews, Deutsche Welle, France 24, and CCTV News, the English-language Chinese news channel. In New York, Nielsen research indicates that RT’s daily audience exceeds the average daily audience of Deutsche Welle, Arabic Al Jazeera English and CCTV News.

Tribune Broadcasting announced that veteran media executive Bob Cook will serve as a strategic advisor, reporting to the division’s CEO and President, Nils Larsen.

Cook will work with the division’s management team in a variety of areas, including strengthening and expanding its sales efforts, developing and distributing original programming, and generally advancing the company’s businesses.

After consultation with FOX Sports, the NFL will determine start times on these dates, with a game or games likely moving to the late afternoon broadcast window. Week 16 (Christmas Eve) is not part of this year’s flexible schedule plan.

Fox Saturday Baseball will present division rivals faceoff on the final weekend before the 82nd MLB All-Star Game airing Tuesday, July 12 at 8:00 PM ET.

FOX SATURDAY BASEBALL GAME OF THE WEEK presents three intra-divisional matchups on Saturday, July 9 (4:00 PM ET).  The city of Brotherly Love host a spectacular pitching matchup as Tommy Hanson and the Braves take on All-Star Cliff Lee and the Phillies. Coming off a terrific June in which he sported a spectacular stat line (5-0, 0.21 ERA), Lee looks to shut down a Braves attack that ranks 18th overall in runs scored. In Chicago, a pair of AL Central rivals battle as Paul Konerko and the White Sox host the Twins. Out west, the Padres hope Clayton Richard is up to the task of slowing down All-Star Matt Kemp and the Dodgers offense.

The MLB on FOX pregame originates live from the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, with host Chris Rose.  Once game action begins, Rose joins Joe Buck, Tim McCarver and Ken Rosenthal as a field reporter.

BRITISH GRAND PRIX AIRS ON FOX – On Sunday, July 10 (12:00 PM ET), the British Grand Prix airs on FOX from Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, England. Over 120,000 fans are expected as everyone on the Formula One circuit chases Sebastian Vettel. The German driver holds a commanding 77-point lead on his competitors, having won six of the eight races and been runner-up in the other two.

“Healthy Week” leverages the breadth of trusted names and brands across the NBCUniversal portfolio to provide consumers with today’s most pressing health-related news, and encourage them to adopt healthier habits in their daily routine.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural “Healthy Week,” NBCUniversal will bring fitness to life with the “Go Healthy Step-a-Thon” in New York City, free and open to the public May 23-25. Sponsored by Walgreens and located in the heart of Times Square, the installation will encourage New Yorkers to join their favorite NBCUniversal brands in taking an active “step” towards a healthier lifestyle as they climb up and around a maze of stairs. A digital ticker will track and display every step taken, and will count towards a donation NBCUniversal will make to the American Cancer Society’s Choose You campaign – a movement that challenges women to make healthier choices in the fight against cancer.
