Dennis Harwood of Corona del Mar was elected president of the Southern California Golf Association at its Annual Meeting on Oct. 25 in Universal City.
Harwood, a retired attorney and business consultant who is a member of Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, will serve the SCGA in the coming year. He succeeds Steve Titus of Pasadena, a member of San Gabriel Country Club.
“I look forward to serving this exceptional organization as president,” Harwood said of the SCGA. “We are recognized on a national basis for having the top golf administrators in the business. It is also difficult to imagine a region with more diverse types of courses to pursue our passion than Southern California – from oceanfront courses to desert courses, from mountain courses to parkland courses.”
Joining Harwood on the SCGA Executive Committee are Dr. Tom Lindgren of Indian Wells, vice president; Ken Bien of Rancho Santa Fe, secretary; and Al Frank of Glendale, treasurer.
Several SCGA members were honored for their service at the Annual Meeting. Bob Wright of Rancho Cucamonga received the Jim House Award, which recognizes the work of an exceptional SCGA volunteer. Bill Woolfolk of Los Angeles was given the Don Carlson Award for his labors as the handicap chair of Bel-Air Country Club. Don Emerson of Rancho Mirage was named the winner of the inaugural Newell Pinch Delegate of the Year Award for his liaison work between his Mission Hills Country Club and the SCGA.
The SCGA Hall of Fame inducted two new members, Amy Alcott and Charlie Sifford, at a luncheon that followed the Annual Meeting. Sifford broke the PGA’s color barrier in the early 1960s and Alcott won 29 tournaments, including five major championships, over her LPGA career.
