The results are in for this year’s top 10 finalists for the Awards and Recognition Association (ARA) seventh annual sportsmanship award www.arasportsmanshipaward.com, given to one outstanding NCAA Division I collegiate football player who best personifies the spirit of sportsmanship.

The 2011 Sportsmanship Award recipient will be chosen from 10 finalists and announced this November.  “This year’s candidates are an outstanding bunch, there is no shortage of positive role-model athletes,” according to former Brigham Young University Head Football Coach LaVell Edwards who chairs the selection committee.

Previous winners are Arizona Cardinals and former University of Texas defensive end, Sam Acho (2010); Miami Dolphin and former Kansas State University tight end, Jeron Mastrud (2009), Chicago Bears and former Northwestern University receiver Eric Peterman (2008); Winnipeg Blue Bombers and former Washington State quarterback Alex Brink (2007); Cincinnati Bengels and former Rutgers University fullback, Brian Leonard (2006) and, Carolina Panthers and former University of Memphis running back, DeAngelo Williams (2005).

The 2011 finalists, in alphabetical order are:

Dennis Harwood of Corona del Mar was elected president of the Southern California Golf Association at its Annual Meeting on Oct. 25 in Universal City.

Harwood, a retired attorney and business consultant who is a member of Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, will serve the SCGA in the coming year. He succeeds Steve Titus of Pasadena, a member of San Gabriel Country Club.

“I look forward to serving this exceptional organization as president,” Harwood said of the SCGA. “We are recognized on a national basis for having the top golf administrators in the business. It is also difficult to imagine a region with more diverse types of courses to pursue our passion than Southern California – from oceanfront courses to desert courses, from mountain courses to parkland courses.”

Joining Harwood on the SCGA Executive Committee are Dr. Tom Lindgren of Indian Wells, vice president; Ken Bien of Rancho Santa Fe, secretary; and Al Frank of Glendale, treasurer.

Several SCGA members were honored for their service at the Annual Meeting. Bob Wright of Rancho Cucamonga received the Jim House Award, which recognizes the work of an exceptional SCGA volunteer. Bill Woolfolk of Los Angeles was given the Don Carlson Award for his labors as the handicap chair of Bel-Air Country Club. Don Emerson of Rancho Mirage was named the winner of the inaugural Newell Pinch Delegate of the Year Award for his liaison work between his Mission Hills Country Club and the SCGA.

The SCGA Hall of Fame inducted two new members, Amy Alcott and Charlie Sifford, at a luncheon that followed the Annual Meeting. Sifford broke the PGA’s color barrier in the early 1960s and Alcott won 29 tournaments, including five major championships, over her LPGA career.

ROSENTHAL STANDS UP TO CANCER DURING ALL-STAR GAME – FOX Sports reporter and FOXSports.com senior MLB columnist Ken Rosenthal will be wearing a bow tie in support of “Stand Up To Cancer” during the 82nd MLB All-Star Game.  SU2C, the official charity for MLB on FOX this season, utilizes resources from the film and media industry to support a new model of cancer research with the mission to fund groundbreaking, collaborative research to accelerate treatments to patients.  Rosenthal has been rocking a bow tie every week this season in support of NFL player Dhani Jones’ Bow Tie Cause initiative.  This Saturday he will wear a bow tie representing ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, during the San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers game.  For more information on the Bow Tie Cause, visit www.bowtiecause.org.

BRITISH GRAND PRIX AIRS ON FOX – On Sunday, July 10 (12:00 PM ET), the British Grand Prix airs on FOX from Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, England. Over 120,000 fans are expected as everyone on the Formula One circuit chases Sebastian Vettel. The German driver holds a commanding 77-point lead on his competitors, having won six of the eight races and been runner-up in the other two.

Los Angeles Clippers forward and 2010-11 T-Mobile NBA Rookie of the Year Blake Griffin has donated the autographed 2011 Kia Optima midsize sedan used in his jaw-dropping dunk in the Sprite Slam Dunk at NBA All-Star 2011 for a public charity auction on AutoTrader.com to benefit Stand Up To Cancer.

Proceeds from the auction of the automobile will go directly to cancer research funded by Stand Up To Cancer in tribute to Griffin’s friend and former high school teammate, Wilson Holloway. A Tulsa native, Wilson passed away on February 16 after a three-year battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Griffin will work with Stand Up to Cancer to identify the best way to utilize the funds to target research done specifically for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The auction is now open on AutoTrader.com and will run through 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET on Sunday, May 15.  To further support Griffin’s commitment to raise funds for cancer research in honor of Holloway, Stand Up To Cancer has created a fundraising team called Team Blake: In Honor of My Friend, Wilson Holloway, through which the public can donate any amount of money at www.su2c.org/BlakeDunk.

Gordon Beckham, second baseman for the Chicago White Sox, is making a donation to the National Parkinson Foundation for every home run that he hits during the 2011 season and he is asking his fans to join him. Out of the Park for Parkinson’s is an awareness campaign he launched in 2010, in partnership with the National Parkinson Foundation, to help end Parkinson’s disease.  Last year, the successful campaign brought in over $60,000 and he hopes to raise even more this year.

Gordon Beckham and his family understand the challenges of Parkinson’s firsthand: his grandfather has been living with the disease for nearly a decade. “My grandfather’s struggle with Parkinson’s has given me an up-close look at the suffering it causes,” said Beckham. “I want to  raise awareness and funds to help eradicate the disease so future generations do not have to go through what our family and countless others have been through with Parkinson’s.” At present, there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease.

Out of the Park for Parkinson’s has two special partners for the new season: HUB 51 Restaurant in Chicago (www.hub51chicago.com) and the Chicago Area & NW Indiana Lexus Dealers (www.lexus.com). HUB 51 is promoting the campaign with a special signature drink on the menu and Lexus Dealers are making a donation for every White Sox RBI and promoting the campaign on CBS Radio.

All proceeds benefit the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF), a national, non-profit organization that funds research, education and outreach programs to improve the lives of people with Parkinson’s disease.  NPF has a strong presence in Chicago, Illinois, supporting the work of Northwestern University’s Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder Center, NPF Center of Excellence, as well as the local NPF chapter, the Parkinson Association of Illinois (PAIL).

New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg announced the return of a trio of champions on the broadcast of NYRR Live from Columbus Circle on ING New York City Marathon Opening Day 2011.

Headlining the field on Sunday, November 6, will be 2010 winners Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia and Edna Kiplagat of Kenya and 2009 champion Meb Keflezighi of the United States.

Keflezighi, the first American to win the race since Alberto Salazar in 1982, was joined by three-time U.S. Olympian Jen Rhines and eight-time Olympic speed skating medalist Apolo Anton Ohno on the NYRR Live half-hour show hosted by Today Show personality Al Roker, veteran WNBC sportscaster Bruce Beck, and WNBC reporter Cat Greenleaf. Both Rhines and Ohno were also announced by Wittenberg for this year’s race, to be run on Sunday, November 6.

Seen on tv.nyrr.org, NYRR Live was broadcast just steps from the famed marathon course and featured a special drawing of entrants for the race, along with prizes and giveaways to the live audience of several hundred. NYRR officials anticipate a race-record 140,000 applicants, with a record 90,000 in the drawing for about 45,000 starting spots. At the end of the show, entrants will learn of their acceptance status on the tv.nyrr.org website.

The findings of a NYRR study based on a survey of more than 1,000 participants from last year’s race indicates a total economic impact of approximately $340 million for New York City, Wittenberg announced. This represents a 25-percent jump since the last study, done in 2006, and was accompanied by a growth in the charity program that raised more than $30 million in 2010.

“Opening day, our launch to marathon season, is the starting line for our extended marathon family of professionals like Meb, Gebre, Edna, and Jen, our celebrity stars like Apolo, all the runners from around the country and the world who have secured coveted spots in the race, and their friends, family, and fans, who are now all on the road to the finish at the greatest day in running, the ING New York City Marathon,” said Wittenberg.

Keflezighi, 35, of Mammoth Lakes, CA, is a New York favorite who will be running the race for the seventh time and has showed remarkable consistency, with five top-10 finishes including his historic triumph in 2009 and last year’s sixth-place finish as the top American. He’ll get extra attention this year, as he’s looking to run both New York and the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials race in Houston in January 2012.

“Marathons are always challenging, but I’m challenging myself further with my goal to run both the ING New York City Marathon 2011 and the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials,” said Keflezighi. “This timing and challenge is very similar to 2004, when I won the silver medal at the Olympic Games and was the runner-up in the ING New York City Marathon 70 days later. This experience gives me, Coach Bob Larsen, and the rest of my team the confidence to pursue the goal of winning the ING New York City Marathon again, and making a third U.S. Olympic team.”

Keflezighi will match up against the defending champion, Gebremariam, 26, of Ethiopia. Since winning the ING New York City Marathon in 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 14 seconds, Gebremariam has finished second at the NYC Half in March in a time of 1:00:25 and third at the Boston Marathon last week in a time of 2:04:53.

Ohno, 28, of Seattle, is the most decorated USA Winter Olympian of all time, having skated his way to two gold, two silver, and four bronze short-track speed skating medals. He has already demonstrated his excellence off his skates by winning the reality TV show Dancing with the Stars in 2007, but running his first 26.2-mile race will be by far one of his biggest career challenges.

“Running a marathon is something that I’ve never done, and I am super excited to take on this incredible challenge,” said Ohno, who took up the challenge by his fellow Subway® enthusiast Jared Fogle, who finished last year’s ING New York City Marathon. “I hope my journey can serve as an inspiration for others to meet their health goals, get their nutrition in order, and ultimately make smarter lifestyle choices.”

Kiplagat, 31, of Kenya, continued her success after her victory, taking second place at the NYC Half in March in a time of 1:09:00. She finished third at the Virgin London Marathon last week, running 2:20:46.

Rhines, 36, of Mammoth Lakes, CA, is coming off a five-year marathon hiatus after finishing fourth in the Rome Marathon on March 26, 2006. She competed in the 2004 Olympic marathon, but has recently focused on shorter distances, including the 5000 meters, which she ran in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Rhines has already won two national championships this year, claiming the half-marathon crown in January and the 15K title last month.

“It is with great excitement and anticipation that I return to the streets of New York this fall,” said Rhines, who last ran New York in 2005. “My training this year shows me that I am stronger than ever, and I will be ready to reach a new personal best. I can’t wait to be fighting for a place on the podium this November!”
